Simon Keith Trumble, an accomplished design architect with more than 25 years of experience in the field, gravitated toward his career at an early age. Growing up in Jamaica, he was greatly inspired by his father, Claude, who found success in the automotive industry and helped develop his interest in car design. While taking drafting classes in middle school, a supportive teacher encouraged him to pursue technical drawing.
Upon graduating from high school, Mr. Trumble pursued his dream by attending the University of Florida, where he discovered a passion for the fundamentals of architectural design, ultimately earning a Bachelor of Design in Architecture in 1991. He gained further expertise at the Vicenza Institute of Architecture in Italy, and dedicated the next decades to bolster his credentials—he studied at the Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán in Mexico and later attained a Master of Architecture from the University of Florida in 1998.
Mr. Trumble launched his career as a designer for SmithGroup from 2000 to 2006, and then joined CUH2A Architecture Engineering Planning, which became HDR Inc. 2010. Over the course of a decade, he excelled as senior designer at the firm before advancing to the position of design principal in 2021. In this capacity, he leads design projects from concept to completion, oversees project delivery, and develops and executes marketing and business development strategies. Outside of his primary endeavors, he gives community presentations about architecture across numerous conferences and venues, and has contributed articles to publications in the field.
Among his extensive portfolio of design architecture projects—which includes the Defense Intelligence Agency headquarters, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center’s instrument development facility, and the Cyber Center of Excellence Campus in Fort Eisenhower, Georgia—he considers his most notable achievement to be designing the Brendan Iribe Center for Computer Sciences and Engineering at the University of Maryland. As lead designer, he oversaw the project redefine the campus entrance, creating a gateway structure and transforming a whole section of the campus for the better. He takes great pride in ensuring that his architectural work heals and enhances places, rather than simply placing buildings on land, and believes the impact of the Iribe Center exemplifies that philosophy.
As a testament to his impact throughout his robust career, Mr. Trumble has accrued numerous accolades, including a project award for the design of the Iribe Center by the university in 2020. He has also received merit awards from the American Institute of Architects and Illuminating Engineering Society; an International Design Architecture Award in 2024; and was a silver winner at the Brick Industry Association’s Brick in Architecture Awards. In addition, he was the featured architect in a 2020 article published by the Virginia Tech Washington-Alexandria Architecture Center.
Looking ahead, Mr. Trumble plans to focus on developing his team’s expertise, fostering growth and confidence among the next generation of architects in his office. His overall goal is to lay a strong foundation for the professionals emerging behind him to have all the tools, abilities, and self-assurance to surpass his own accomplishments. He hopes to build a lasting legacy within the field through this mission.
